Is the L20 legal?
Yes. The L20 only assists you if you pedal yourself and stops at 25 km/h, with a 250W motor and no throttle. This makes it just an electric bike, not a moped. So you are allowed to ride it anywhere you can ride a regular bike.
How fast does the L20 go, and am I allowed to increase its speed?
The L20 supports speeds up to 25 km/h. Faster is not allowed: as soon as you modify a fatbike to go faster, it is legally considered a moped. You are then required to have insurance, a license plate, and a helmet, and your warranty becomes void. With our bikes, you ride safely within the rules.
Do I need a driver's license, insurance, or registration for the L20?
No. Because the L20 supports speeds up to 25 km/h, it counts as a regular bike. No driver's license, no license plate, no mandatory insurance. A bike insurance against theft or damage is smart, but that’s up to you.
From what age are you allowed to ride the L20?
In the UK you must be 14 or over to ride an electric bike (EAPC) like this one on public roads (gov.uk). A helmet is not compulsory for EAPC riders, but it is recommended.
How far can you go with the L20 on a single battery charge?
With the L20, you can ride about 120 km on a full battery. The exact distance depends on your speed, your weight, how much assistance you use, and the wind.
What warranty do I get on the L20?
You get a 2-year warranty on the frame and 1 year on the moving parts. If something breaks during that period due to a manufacturing defect, we will take care of it for you.

ENGWE L20 at GOfatbike

The ENGWE L20 in pink is an electric fatbike with a low step-through frame, wide 20-inch tires, and a removable battery. A cheerful color for those who want a bike that looks a little different. Groceries, a ride along the water, or commuting to work. It’s made for one person and rides smoothly, with pedal assist that gives you a boost as soon as you start pedaling. Not a sporty racing bike, but a comfortable city bike with fat tires.

Low step-through and comfort

The biggest advantage is felt when mounting the bike. Thanks to the low step-through frame, you don’t have to swing your leg high over the saddle. You can step right through. Handy if you’re wearing a long coat or if your knees aren’t as flexible as they used to be. Also convenient at traffic lights. Just put a foot down and go again.

The riding position is upright. You look over the traffic instead of being right in the middle of it. Together with the wide tires, the L20 feels stable, even at a slow pace. If you prefer a sporty, forward-leaning ride, this isn’t your bike. The L20 consciously chooses comfort.

Range and battery

The battery is removable. You can take it off the bike and charge it indoors while the bike stays in the shed or storage. Great if you don’t have a power outlet near your parking spot.

We’re honest about the range. The L20 has a generous range, but how far you get depends on your weight, the wind, how much assist you use, and whether you encounter many bridges or hills. If you ride efficiently on a low assist level, you’ll get more range than on the highest setting. Consider the stated range as a guideline, not a promise.

Motor, speed, and regulations

The L20 has a 250W motor that assists you while you pedal. As soon as you pedal, the motor gives a push. If you stop pedaling, the assist stops. There is no throttle to ride without pedaling.

The assistance runs up to 25 km/h. Beyond that, you pedal on your own power. Because of the 250W and the 25 km/h limit, the L20 is considered a regular electric bike. You don’t need a driver’s license, registration, or mandatory helmet for it. A tip: leave the bike as it is. We advise against increasing the speed. You will lose the status of a regular electric bike, and the bike is not built for that.

Tires, brakes, and riding feel

The wide 20-inch tires define the character of this bike. They absorb bumpy paths or small steps smoothly and provide a lot of grip. In pink, that tough fatbike shape immediately gets a playful edge. On a sandy path or a rough piece of asphalt, the L20 stays stable. Because the wheels are a bit smaller than on a regular city bike, it steers nimbly.

The riding feel is calm and predictable. Not a bike that challenges you to go fast, but one you can ride relaxed on. For short to medium rides in and around the city, it’s a good choice.

Who is the ENGWE L20 for?

The L20 suits someone looking for a comfortable, low-threshold bike for daily use. If you like to sit upright, want to get on and off easily, and still want a tough look with fat tires, this is a good fit.

Who is it less suitable for? If you want a light bike to carry on the train, a fatbike with those thick tires is heavier and bulkier. If you want to ride two people on one bike, that’s not possible. The L20 is made for one person. And if you’re mainly after speed and sportiness, you’re better off looking at another type.
