What makes a fatbike different from a regular e-bike

A fatbike has a 250W motor with pedal assist up to 25 km/h. Legally the same as a normal e-bike, but the riding experience is different. The wide tires absorb vibrations, making the bike more stable on cobblestones and curbs. The assistance kicks in smoothly when you start pedaling, and on longer rides you arrive less tired. Hydraulic disc brakes provide short and controlled stopping, which is great in busy city traffic. You don’t have to squeeze hard to stop quickly. For those switching from a regular electric bike, this is often the biggest difference. You also notice that the wider tires slip less on rain or wet roads, making winter riding much more relaxed. Because the center of gravity is low, the bike feels solid even at low speeds.

Which fatbike suits you

The choice mainly depends on how you will use it. For commuting shorter distances, a standard battery of around 480Wh is usually sufficient. If you ride 20 kilometers or more daily, you’re better off with a larger battery or a model with a dual battery option. Unsure between low and high step-through? A low step-through is more practical if you often ride with bags or a child seat, or if mounting is a bit more difficult. For women who are a bit shorter, a low step-through usually works better, simply because it’s easier to get off at traffic lights. Most models have a fairly upright seating position. That gives you a good view of traffic and less pressure on your back and wrists, which helps on longer rides.

What ultimately matters is how a bike feels after a few weeks of daily use. Specs say something, but stability, support, and braking behavior you only notice when you’re really on the bike.
