The Vortex uses a 48V 250W rear hub motor with a torque sensor. This sensor measures how hard you pedal and adjusts the assistance accordingly, which feels smooth and predictable. The support stops at 25 km/h and you always pedal yourself; there is no throttle. This means the bike falls under regular electric bikes, requiring no license, registration, or helmet. It might sound tempting to make the motor faster, but don’t do that. You will take the Vortex out of its legal category, the brakes and frame are not built for consistently higher speeds, and your warranty will be voided. As delivered, it is just right.

Tires, brakes, and riding feel

The CST fat tires measuring 20 by 4.0 inches are wide and provide plenty of grip, whether you’re riding on asphalt or a loose path. They also absorb some of the vibrations, which together with the suspension gives a smooth ride. Braking is handled by hydraulic disc brakes, which provide strong and consistent stopping power with little hand effort, even when wet. You shift with the Shimano seven-speed gears. A 130-lux LED headlight ensures visibility in the dark, and a rear rack and fenders come standard. Keep in mind that the wide tires and suspension add weight, so lifting the bike requires some strength.
