Is the Zip legal?
Yes. The Zip only assists you when you pedal yourself and stops at 25 km/h, with a 250W motor and no throttle. This makes it just an electric bike, not a moped. So you are allowed to ride it anywhere you can ride a regular bike.
How fast does the Zip go, and am I allowed to increase its speed?
The Zip supports speeds up to 25 km/h. Faster is not allowed: as soon as you modify a folding bike to go faster, it is legally considered a moped. You are then required to have insurance, a license plate, and a helmet, and your warranty becomes void. With our bikes, you ride safely within the rules.
Do I need a driver's license, insurance, or registration for the Zip?
No. Because the Zip supports speeds up to 25 km/h, it counts as a regular bike. No driver's license, no license plate, no mandatory insurance. However, bike insurance against theft or damage is a smart idea, but that’s up to you.
From what age are you allowed to ride the Zip?
There is no legal minimum age for an electric bike like the Zip in the Netherlands. Anyone can ride it, and wearing a helmet is not mandatory.
How far can you go with the Zip on a single battery charge?
With the Zip, you can ride about 120 km on a full battery. The exact distance depends on your speed, your weight, how much assistance you use, and the wind.
What warranty do I get on the Zip?
You get a 3-year warranty on the frame and 1 year on the moving parts. If something breaks during that period due to a manufacturing defect, we will take care of it for you.

ENGWE Zip at GOfatbike

The ENGWE Zip is a compact, foldable electric bike designed for the city. It folds small, is light to carry, and agile in busy traffic. Looking for a folding bike you can quickly take on the train, slide under your desk, or store in a small closet? Then this is a model worth checking out. Below, we’ll calmly walk through what the Zip can do, where it excels, and who it might be less suitable for.

Easy mounting and comfort

Mounting the Zip is smooth. You sit upright, with the handlebars close, giving you a good overview in the city. Handy at traffic lights and on narrow bike paths, as you can easily put a foot down. The compact frame makes the bike easy to handle, even when carrying it by hand for a short distance. Comfortable riding and compact storage go hand in hand here. You will notice that a small folding bike feels different from a large city bike. Those used to a large frame will need some time to get used to the short, direct steering.

Range and battery

The range depends on more than just the battery. Your weight, the wind, how much you pedal yourself, and the level of assistance all determine how far you can go. If you ride a lot with high assistance against the wind, you’ll get fewer kilometers than when pedaling gently on a low setting. For daily city rides, to work and back, the Zip offers a generous range. If you charge the battery at a fixed time, for example in the evening, you’ll be ready to go the next morning. If you want to take long tours without charging on the way, keep in mind that a compact battery has its limits.

Motor, speed, and regulations

The Zip has a 250W motor and supports speeds up to 25 km/h. This assistance works based on pedaling; there is no throttle. If you stop pedaling, the assistance stops. Because of this combination—250W, up to 25 km/h, and pedal assistance without a throttle—the Zip is considered a regular electric bike. You do not need a driver's license, registration plate, or helmet. We advise against modifying the bike to increase its power. Doing so removes it from the category it was designed and approved for, which can cause insurance and safety issues.

Tires, brakes, and riding experience

On the road, the Zip feels stable and agile. The tires handle the city well, from bike paths to some street riding, and the brakes bring you to a smooth stop. Because the bike is compact, it steers sharply and directly, which is great in heavy traffic and when parking. With small wheels, you do feel bumps more than on a larger bike, so it’s not the softest choice for long rides on rough roads. For daily city rides, the Zip rides lively and enjoyable.

Who is the ENGWE Zip for

The Zip suits commuters who take their bike on public transport, city riders with limited storage space, and anyone who wants to fold and unfold quickly. Small living spaces, small elevators, small trunks? This model plays its strongest card there. The Zip is less suitable if you mainly do long tours, ride a lot on rough terrain, or want a large, tall bike with a sturdy seat. If you are tall and want a large frame, a compact folding bike can feel a bit small. The strength of the Zip lies in being compact and light, not in maximum size and range.
