Low step-through and comfort

Mounting is easy. The frame has a relatively low step-through, so you don’t have to lift your leg very high to get over it. Great if your knees or hips are a bit stiff, or if you often get on and off. The saddle is wide and soft, and the wide tires absorb some of the vibrations on the road. Comfort over sportiness is the approach here. If you want a tight racing feel and to lean far forward, this is not your bike. If you want a relaxed, upright posture, you’re in the right place.

Range and battery

You can easily remove the battery from the frame. That means you can charge it separately, for example next to an indoor power outlet. How far you can go on one charge depends on many factors. Your weight, the wind, how much assistance you choose, and how often you have to stop and start. So it offers a generous range, but no fixed number that applies to everyone. If you mostly ride in the highest setting against the wind, you’ll get less range than someone who pedals calmly in a low setting. So don’t count on a maximum from a brochure, but on what fits your rides.

Motor, speed, and regulations

The Engine X features a 250W motor. It assists you while pedaling up to 25 km/h, after which the support stops and you pedal on your own power. There is no throttle, so you always have to pedal yourself. Because of this combination—250W, up to 25 km/h, and pedal assistance without a throttle—the Engine X is considered a regular electric bike. No license, no registration plate, no helmet requirement. You might see online videos where people try to make the bike go faster. We advise against that. If you tune it up, it no longer falls under the rules for a regular e-bike, which can cause issues with insurance and liability.

Tires, brakes, and riding feel

The wide 20-inch tires give the Engine X a stable, somewhat rugged riding feel. They roll smoothly over gravel paths, loose sand, or bumpy curbs. Thanks to the smaller wheel size, the bike handles corners quickly, which is handy in busy streets. The riding feel is calm and solid in a good way, not nervous. The brakes bite enough to bring you to a smooth stop even with a full shopping bag. Keep in mind, the wide tires and folding frame don’t make it super light. Carrying it up to a third floor without an elevator is no fun.

If you’re looking for a light, fast city bike you can carry up the stairs with one hand, look elsewhere. And if you want to go really fast, a pedal-assisted bike won’t satisfy you anyway, because above 25 km/h, it’s all on you.
