Is the Baboon legal?
Yes. The Baboon only assists you when you pedal yourself and stops at 25 km/h, with a 250W motor and no throttle. This makes it just an electric bike, not a moped. So you are allowed to ride it anywhere you can ride a regular bike.
How fast does the Baboon go, and am I allowed to increase its speed?
The Baboon supports speeds up to 25 km/h. Faster is not allowed: as soon as you tune a fatbike, it legally counts as a moped. You are then required to have insurance, a license plate, and a helmet, and your warranty becomes void. With our bikes, you ride safely within the rules.
Do I need a driver's license, insurance, or registration for the Baboon?
No. Because the Baboon supports up to 25 km/h, it counts as a regular bike. No driver's license, no license plate, no mandatory insurance. A bike insurance against theft or damage is smart, but that’s up to you.
From what age are you allowed to ride the Baboon?
There is no legal minimum age for an electric bike like the Baboon in the Netherlands. Anyone can ride it, and a helmet is not mandatory.
How far can you go with the Baboon on a single battery charge?
With the Baboon, you can ride about 80 km on a full battery. The exact distance depends on your speed, your weight, how much assistance you use, and the wind.
What warranty do I get on the Baboon?
You get a 3-year warranty on the frame and 1 year on the moving parts. If something breaks during that period due to a manufacturing defect, we will take care of it for you.

ApeRyder Baboon at GOfatbike

The ApeRyder Baboon is designed for those who demand a bit more from a fatbike: longer rides, a sturdier build, or a calmer riding style on rough roads. It’s a fatbike that prioritizes stability over agility. You sit upright, the tires are extra wide, and the motor assists as soon as you start pedaling. In this explanation, you’ll learn what the Baboon excels at, who it’s suitable for, and what to consider before choosing it.

Entry and comfort

On the Baboon, you sit upright and relaxed, with your hands lightly on the handlebars and your feet well positioned on the pedals. The frame is designed for comfortable and stable seating, not for sporty forward leaning. This makes the bike pleasant for longer rides and for someone who wants a bit more space and support. If you’re looking for a light, sporty bike that handles sharp turns, this is not the model for that. With the Baboon, calm and steady sitting comes first.

Range and battery

The battery is integrated into the frame and is meant to handle longer rides. How far you get depends on your weight, the wind, the level of assistance, and how often you accelerate. A heavier rider or frequent use of the highest assist level reduces the range, while riding calmly extends it. So, expect a margin rather than a fixed number. When the battery is empty, you recharge it from a power outlet. For daily and somewhat longer rides, you have enough capacity. If you often ride with luggage or take longer routes, the range decreases slightly. Strong wind and heavier loads consume extra energy, so for long rides, feel free to plan a charging break to avoid running out.

Motor, speed, and regulations

The Baboon has a 250-watt motor that supports speeds up to 25 kilometers per hour. You pedal yourself and there is no throttle, so the bike counts as a regular electric bike. No driver's license, registration, or helmet is required. We advise against tuning the motor. Above the allowed limit, the bike falls outside the category of regular e-bikes, the brakes and frame are not designed for it, and you lose your warranty. Therefore, leave the assistance as it is set by default.

Tires, brakes, and stability

The extra-wide fatbike tires give the Baboon a lot of grip and a stable feeling on the street, grass, or a path with loose sand. They also absorb a large part of the vibrations, keeping the ride smooth, even on rougher roads. The brakes bring the bike to a neat stop, even when wet. That stability comes at a weight cost: the Baboon is heavier than a lighter fatbike, so lifting it on stairs or into a trunk requires strength.

Who is this fatbike for

The Baboon is for those who want to ride stable and sturdy, take longer rides, or have a heavier build. Comfortable for commuting, shopping, and weekend trips, with a calm riding style on less even roads. Honestly, this is not the bike for those looking for something light and agile to lift often or take on the train. If you want a more compact, lighter fatbike, look at another model. If you seek calm and stability, this is the right choice.

Ordering at GOfatbike

The experiences of customers who already ride the Baboon give a good picture of daily use. The ApeRyder Baboon is available at GOfatbike.
